| Meet The Artist |
| Emanuel Salvador (violin) |
Described by the Strad Magazine as "one of the finest Portuguese violinists of his generation", Emanuel Salvador has already performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the U.K., Kazakhstan, Portugal, Holland, Mexico, Spain, Italy and Malta. He has been awarded top prizes at Isolde Menges and Beckenham Festival competitions and scholarships from Barbirolli Memorial, Wolfson and Gulbenkian Foundations, Jovens Músicos and the Instituto Camões Grant.
After graduating from Artave (a specialist music school) as the best student of the year he moved to London, where he gained a BMus from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama studying with Professor John Glickman, and a MMus from Royal College of Music studying with Felix Andrievski.
As a concerto soloist Emanuel has played with several orchestras including Sinfonica UANL, Rotterdam Ensemble, Newbury Symphony, Norte and Nova Amadeus, His festival appearances include Gaia International, Proms in St. Judes and Ampthill and the International String Orchestra Festival in Malta.
Since September 2005 Emanuel has been the leader of Orquestra do Norte in Portugal.
Q: Emanuel, thanks so much for agreeing to answer some of our questions. Will your concert on 9 January with Annie Yim (piano) be your first appearance at St Martin's?
No, this will be a return visit, but it will be my first appearance as part of the Concordia Foundation series at the gloriously renovated St. Martin-in-the-Field's! The last time I performed at St. Martin's was back in 2003.
Q: Your roots lie in Portugal, but you are a graduate of an English college (Guildhall School of Music and Drama) will your recital here be a 'home' performance?
Yes, definitely! I spent 6 years of my life in London (first at the GSMD and later at the RCM for my Master's Degree), and I still go back there regularly for concerts. Playing in London is usually very rewarding as I feel audiences are very appreciative and it is easy to "feel at home".
Q: You must have a busy schedule as leader of the Orquestra do Norte in Portugal, how do you balance this with your solo and chamber appearances?
My schedule is definitely very busy. In a year I normally have around 130/140 concerts of which 30% are solo and chamber music performances. In order to balance my orchestral commitments with my solo and chamber music projects I try to assign regular periods of the year to these specific projects, like the duo with Annie Yim, the violin and harp duo with Ieuan Jones and all the solos with different orchestras.
Q: We are very much looking forward to your recital here, what does the rest of 2009 hold in store for you?
This year will be full of new and exciting projects. Mendelssohn will play a big role in it as it will be the 200th anniversary of his birth. I will play his violin concerto in E minor with the Rotterdam Ensemble in Malta (as part of ISOFestival), and later at the Doelen Hall (Rotterdam) in June. His Violin and Piano Concerto is scheduled for May in Portugal with Orquestra do Norte. Also in May, I will do a new project with Rafaela Salvador (my sister, who is a contemporary dancer based in Lisbon), of her new choreography which uses Bach's Sonata in A minor for solo violin. In late January and also in Portugal, will do some concerts with Ieuan Jones (harpist) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of L. Spohr. One of the concerts will be broadcasted live for Portuguese classical radio.
Also scheduled for 2009 is Brahms Concerto, Freitas Branco Concerto, and a gipsy themed concert with Orquestra do Norte in which I will play Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen and Ravel Tzigane's.
Thank you for your time Emanuel. We look forward hearing you and Annie Yim on 9 January. |
